Motorcycle Safety Foundation
If you’re learning to ride a Motorcycle. One thing I would recommend is looking for a local Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course. This will teach you how to ride and give you 1-2 days of practice, as well as an exam. They start out with classroom hours, and then they set you up for the range. They give you time to get used to the motorcycle. The range will get you comfortable on the motorcycle and help you get used to being on two wheels.
Where are you looking?
If you buy a motorcycle from a dealership, they will offer a training course. You can also look at your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They will sometimes offer the course. Look into your options and pricing. The local Dealer may charge more for the course. I know when I took the course through the state, it was only $50.00 and the exam counted for the road test at the BMV.
The MSF has different courses from Starting the Ride to Mastering the Ride. I have only done the Starting the Ride course, however, I want to go back and take an advanced course to get me more information and experience with the bike.
Motorcycle Safety Foundation
To take the course, at least through the state of Ohio you are required to have an M1 Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) which is your learner’s permit. You also need a helmet, jacket, long pants, gloves, and sturdy shoes.
Other benefits to taking the course include:
- If you take the MSF course you can generally get a discount on your insurance.
- Successful completion earns a 60-day BMV skill test waiver for a motorcycle endorsement (*Check Local Laws*)
- Gives you the knowledge and confidence to comfortably ride your new motorcycle
